"O Our Lady of Lebanon, / Cedar of Immense Shadow, / Make of thy green palms / a roof of thy children.

When the tempest threatens / and Satan growls, / Embraced under thy shadow, / We feel safe."

                                     Charles Corm (The Inspired Mountain)

Lebanon is conceived as a Euro-Mediterranean concentrate in view of its geographic position, religious and cultural diversity, and democratic nature.  The war waged by Israel in summer 2006 imposes on the European Union to make a display of its force as a regional power. At the outset, Lebanon is the first tangible proof that Europe should overcome for satisfying its vision of a Mediterranean space where peace prevails, promoter of development and democracy in compliance with its commitments adopted in 1995 on occasion of the Barcelona conference. Lebanon not only has a destiny, shadowy until present, but also a mandatory destination: becoming a beacon of democracy in the Middle East of the Twenty-First Century, thus questioning its history, including its most recent.” Béatrice Patrie “Who wants to destroy Lebanon ?” (2007)      all Citations

Lebanon: triumph and humiliation

The image did not pass unnoticed. Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at Rafic Hariri international airport of Beirut, the Lebanese Christian president Michel Sleiman, the Sunnite Prime Minister Fouad Siniora and the Shiite President of Parliament Nabih Berri gave a warm welcome to the prisoners of Hezbollah released by Israel in exchange for the corpses of two Israeli soldiers kidnapped the day before the war on Lebanon, in July 2006. An optimal way to consolidate a very fresh national unity and putting an end to the conflict that caused 1.300 dead on the Lebanese side and 139 on the Israeli side. This event transcended political schisms that had led the Country of the Cedars last May on the verge of civil war. It is taking place at a time when Lebanon is experiencing a period of almost unexpected stability. Irony of the calendar: the day before, the new government held its first session. For the Party of God offspring of the Israeli invasion of 1982, victory is two-fold. Despite the American pressures, the party of Hassan Nasrallah conquered the blocking minority to which he aspired for rallying the government. Moreover, by obtaining from the sworn enemy, Israel, the release of five prisoners, the Party of God further increased its legitimacy of resistance movement. And here is the trap. With the strength of its “triumph”, Hezbollah can decide its full integration in the Lebanese political life. However, it can also keep acting as leverage to its Iranian and Syrian mentor. Far from integrating itself in the Lebanese army, the Party of God has, on the contrary, considerably rearmed itself since the war of 2006. In order to be viable in the long run, the Lebanese State will have to regain control of the areas which it had, up to now, given up to Hezbollah. In Paris, the French President Nicolas Sarkozy received forty heads of state and government who came to take part in the summit of launching the Union for the Mediterranean (UPM), on Sunday, July 13, 2008. This event served as springboard for the dialogue between Lebanon and Syria, whereby Syrian President Bachar el-Assad engaged before President Michel Sleiman to establish normal diplomatic relations involving the opening of embassies in the two countries. In Lebanon, where the great summer festivals began in Byblos, Beiteddine and Baalbek, thousands of Lebanese from abroad as well as Arab and European friends and others keep coming in a climate very favorable to the resumption of Tourism.    >> continuation      all Flashs

A moment of pure magic with Catherine Deneuve in Lebanon  21 May 2007 - N°69

It is one of the magical nights that brings forth the rebirth of Lebanon from its ashes. Reviving the splendorous past, undermined by several ill-intentioned parties. Driving to think and believe that anything is possible, above all the achievement of happiness. Within the immemorial framework of InterContinental Phoenicia hotel, around its royal swimming pool, more than 400 elegantly dressed persons gathered  in witness of the splendour of the pre-war years. And… the beautiful Catherine Deneuve, in Lebanon for a few days, to participate in the filming of the feature film starring Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige, of which a scene was filmed during such unique evening event in benefit of Skoun Association.  At the moment of departure, an evening Cinderella stated: "This is Lebanon !" Full of generosity and hospitality, a dreamland, with know-how and the will to live decently, and above all, the nostalgia of legitimate happiness.

Who wants to destroy Lebanon ?  16 May 2007 - N°16

by BÉATRICE PATRIE and EMMANUEL ESPAÑOL One hundred days after the end of the war of 2006, the assassination of young minister Pierre Gemayel plunged Lebanon again in the endless spiral of terror. Impotence, but not resignation, strange word in the Lebanese vocabulary. Fall seven times, rise eight times. Everybody is aware what the Lebanese are capable of. But in addition to their known courage for incessantly building their destroyed houses, their broken lives, how can we endow them with the necessary courage for getting rid of the ordeals of a revolved political history, with its feudal lords and warlords? The children of Israel can sleep on their two ears, essentially affirmed Ben Gourion, when the tribe of Israel is no longer surrounded by all the tribes of the Middle East ... It is against this vision that Lebanon should nowadays be constructed.
